Informatica ambientale and DISAT-Unimib at the SETAC Europe meeting 2015
Informatica ambientale and DISAT (Dipartimento di Scienze Ambiente e Territorio e Scienze della Terra – Department of Environment and Earth Sciences) of Milano-Bicocca University will jointly present the new webGis system VULPES to evaluate the groundwater vulnerability to pesticide at regional level at the next SETAC Europe meeting to be held in Barcelona (ES) by 3-7 May 2015. VULPES is the prototype and development version of Informatica ambientale “Susap T” currently used by Lombardy and Veneto regions for forecast and regulatory purposes.
The groundwater VULnerability to PESticide software system (VULPES) is a user-friendly, GIS-based and client-server software developed to identify vulnerable areas to pesticides at regional level making use of pesticide fate models. It is a Decision Support System aimed to assist the public policy makers to investigate areas sensitive to specific substances and to propose limitations of use or mitigation measures. VULPES identify the so-called Uniform Geographical Unit (UGU) which are areas characterised by the same agro-environmental conditions. In each UGU it applies the PELMO or the PEARL models obtaining the 80th percentile of the substance concentration at 1 meter depth; then VULPES creates a vulnerability map in shapefile format which classifies the outputs comparing them with the lower threshold set to the legal limit concentration in groundwater (0.1 μg/l). It can be used in conjunction with monitoring data from public authorities and agencies to provide a deeper level of analysis and a help in characterising areas where focus further investigation.
We will look forward to see you in Barcelona!
